Return to the Kiosk - Day One

November 1, 2011 - Set up the kiosk last night with the help of my dear friend Melissa (thank you ♥) and opened up today. I have SO much inventory this time that it was really a challenge to make it presentable without looking junky. First thing this morning I spent a couple of hours arranging and re-arranging my products. I think it looks pretty good.

Oh, I should mention that I interviewed a potential new part-time employee during that time too. Just another one of the many hats I wear as a sole proprietor. By noon I was pleased with the display and was officially ready for business.

It didn't take long for me to get back into my concierge-annex role (a self-appointed title). An hour after the mall opened, I had already given directions to 3 shoppers. For some reason people always stop by my kiosk to ask questions. This was also a common occurrence while I was there back in the Summer. Anyway, thank goodness I had my trusty mall directory handy. In the 2 months since I've been gone, I've forgotten where many of the stores are myself. I'm sure it won't take long to get back up to speed though. The shoppers will see to that.

Later that day... my first sale of the day was an Eye Glam © eyeglass case that I crafted from African Print fabric covered with beautiful masks. It sparked a conversation between the purchaser and myself about our respective trips to Africa. It was a pleasure talking with her, and it reminded me that sometimes a perfect stranger can make your day. It's good to be back. :-)

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities to increase awareness of the disease, and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Organization is celebrating 25 years of educating and empowering the public about the disease, and the global leader of the breast cancer movement, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, has invested more than $1.9 billion since its inception in 1982 in its efforts to end breast cancer.

Like all too many of us, I have had family members and friends diagnosed with the disease, and I pray that a cure will soon be found. In support of this cause, SKCreations, LLC has created Lil' Somethin' Somethin' Bags and Clutch Wallets crafted from fabric designed with the Breast Cancer Awareness signature pink ribbon. They are now available on our website. A portion of the proceeds from sales of these items will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.

30th Annual Takoma Park Street Festival

The Old Town Alexandria Annual Arts & Crafts Festival went off very well this weekend. In spite of the intense heat on Saturday and the threat of storms on Sunday, there were throngs of people visiting Market Square each day. The area is very popular for strolling, and it's the place-to-be for dog walkers. Some of the dogs even posed for photos! So cute! ♥

The Messenger Bag

I am a list person. I live by them. I have all sorts of to-do lists, shopping lists and project lists, and I take great pleasure in completing something and crossing that something off my list. One of the things that's been on my sewing project list for a while is to make a prototype of a messenger bag. I'm happy to report that over the last month I was finally able to get to it. I always make a prototype before I create products to market and sell. That way I can do whatever tweaking and adjusting I deem necessary to be satisfied with the end result.

Since I would be creating my own pattern, I knew this project would be a challenge. Initially I wasn't quite sure what I wanted the final dimensions to be, so I played around with various measurements for about a day. I finally decided on 14" L x 12" H x 5" W.

The easiest part of the whole project was figuring out what fabrics I would use. For the main body of the bag I chose black cotton twill fabric and a patterned denim with a black design running through it.

Since I love to combine fabrics, I decided to sew together strips of various fabrics I like to create the outer flap.

I also knew that I wanted two front pockets on the main body, an interior zip pocket, a large pocket on the back, a zip top on the main part of the bag and, of course, a long cross-body strap.

Well after several modifications, and a few choice words, my prototype was finished. When I typed up all the steps I ended up with four pages! What was I thinking? I turned this project into a beast! But I do love the end result. I added a beautiful red bead as an accent piece. It's not a closure since the bag flap fastens with a magnetic snap.

I regret that I was unable to take a good photo of the bag's interior. After several unsuccessful tries, I just gave up. I'll have to work on that. Anyway, I learned a few things along the way and I'm now better prepared to create more of these bags to market and sell in the future. I'm not sure how soon I'll start, but it will definitely be on my project list. For now though, the prototype can be crossed off! Yay. ☺

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending a Healthy Meals cooking demonstration sponsored by the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, NBC4 and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. The best part? The demonstration was done by my favorite Top Chef All-Star, Carla Hall! Carla, along with Washington Hospital Center cardiologist, Susan Bennett, MD, showed us how to prepare two delicious low-salt, low-fat dishes in the microwave, and then we got to sample them! Yum! It was a perfect start to my Saturday, and an experience that I will treasure. Since we were given copies of the recipes, I will be preparing them myself very soon. The icing on the cake? Carla is now the owner of a Lil' Somethin' Somethin' bag by SKCreations, LLC. ♥

The garmentDISTRICT is a program of Shaw Main Streets, Inc. and SiNGA, Inc., providing a unique space for local designers and artists to display and sell their work. It's been awhile since I shared any of my writings, so...

It's 20 degrees outside today and the wind is howling. The heating system inside our office building is struggling to win the battle against the cold held by the wall-to-wall windows. She is wearing a thin cotton T-shirt, and clogs on her feet with no socks! Isn't she freezing? I'm cold just looking at her. The ironic thing is, this woman knits constantly! I swear she's obsessed. In the morning, on her lunch hour, even during office functions, she never seems to be without her bag of knitting supplies. She is always knitting something. Socks, vests, sweaters and coats that look like items Nordstrom would carry. Baby jumpers and blankets that any new mother would cherish. She even knitted the business card holder sitting on her desk out of what looks like copper wire. The woman is in-arguably very good at her craft, and clearly has many pieces of warm clothing at her disposal. So why on Earth isn't she wearing any of them? I can't bare to look her. I need some cocoa.

The year is drawing to a close and what a year it has been. I tried new things and learned new things, and am thankful for each experience. Most of all, I'm thankful for the friends and patrons, old and new, who supported SKCreations, LLC throughout the year. You are what makes this whole journey worthwhile. It warms my heart when you share your excitement over one of my creations and it just makes me want to do more. That is exactly what I plan to do in the new year, and I'm looking forward to continuing our relationships.

I plan to introduce some new products in 2011 with the help of my new toy, a snap press, which makes it so much easier to apply snaps to fabric than doing it by hand. I'm so excited about it that I've had to keep myself from attaching snaps to half the items in my house! Best of all, I was able to get the press in my favorite color, Red (big smile)!

The Shape of Things to Come: A Creative Collaboration

MARK YOUR CALENDAR for The Shape of Things to Come: A Creative Collaboration, an art exhibition featuring artists Cynthia Farrell Johnson, Desiree Sterbini, Sherry Burton Ways, Lezetta Moyer, Betty Farrell and Sharon Keyser-Jackson, opening January 5, 2011 at the Sandy Spring Museum in Sandy Spring, MD.

It all started when Cynthia Farrell Johnson, a painter, met Sharon Keyser-Jackson, a fiber artist. Each admired the work of the other. They mused about the possibility of doing a joint project some day. A little over a year after that initial conversation, they hit upon an idea. Johnson would create four designs and Sharon would interpret them in her own style. While discussing the idea with longtime friend and quilter extraordinaire, Lezetta Moyer, Johnson invited her to join the group. The next artist to be drawn into the project was Betty Farrell, an accomplished knitter who has collaborated with her sister in the past. When Desiree Sterbini, who does exquisite oil pastels, heard about the project, she was intrigued and wanted to join. Sherry Burton Ways, a wonderful doll artist, was later invited to join the project and interpret the designs in her medium. The work of these women celebrates the many ways that artists express themselves. The titles of each design is the common thread that connects all of the pieces in The Shape of Things to Come. They are:

Out of Kilter;
Balm in Gilead;
In Full Bloom; and
Hearts and Minds

These titles hold a different meaning for each person. The goal was not to copy Johnson's initial design, but rather to express the meaning each of her designs held for the artists. The shop is currently located at 1528 U Street, N.W., however that location will be closing on December 24th and their new larger store will open at 3068 Mount Pleasant Street, N.W. Steel Doors in Barcelona, Spain

I recently spent time in Barcelona, Spain and found it to be a very lively and beautiful city. Seeing the streets filled with people on scooters made me wish I had one myself. The food was great and I was in awe of the history and culture. For an artist, there was no shortage of inspiration. I was particularly impressed with the artwork found on many of the steel doors while walking around. Some of them reflect an African influence.

Vignette: The Workout

This is a re-post of a vignette I posted on my other blog (now defunct) back in November 2009. I wrote it when recalling an aerobics instructor I once had who was no joke. Since I had such good workouts this week I decided to revisit it. It always amuses me...

He enters the room with a boom box the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, and a duffel bag that could carry a small child. He sets down the box and starts rummaging through the bag, at which time I see that it's filled with CDs. While searching for the right one he yells out "the class is box aerobics! I hope you're ready because we're going to work tonight!" He loads his CD of choice and the room fills with what sounds like house music at a night club. He turns up the volume and moves to the front of the room. He immediately jumps into a routine that has the class moving double-time, and after five minutes yells out, "that was your warm-up!" I thought, he's got to be kidding. He then leads us through a series of steps involving marching, lunging, kicking and punching, adding a new move after we've mastered each previous one. Although his workout clothes are drenched with sweat and sticking to his lean but muscular frame, he doesn't even appear to be breathing hard. The music increases in tempo and all of a sudden he breaks into a dance routine that looks like he's auditioning for So You Think You Can Dance. It's as if the class has disappeared. He's clearly in a world of his own. When the song finally ends he comes out of his trance and calls out, "take a break everybody!". I guess he didn't realize we just did.

I'm In! - National Urban League's 100th Anniversary Conference

A couple of months ago a friend emailed me with a small business vendor opportunity from the Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL), which will host the National Urban League's (NUL) 100th Anniversary Conference in Washington, DC in late July 2010. The conference will take place over four days and is expected to be a historic event with approximately 10,000 attendees. The GWUL was seeking applications from individual entrepreneurs with high quality, unique items to showcase and sell in the Small Business/Vendors Marketplace. Applicants eligible for consideration would be contacted for an interview with GWUL before a final decision would be rendered. After reading the material I felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety. I've participated in numerous shows and events in the past, but was I ready for something on this scale?

No question the event would be a tremendous opportunity. First of all I fully support the mission of the NUL, a historic civil rights organization which, along with its affiliates, is dedicated to economic empowerment, educational opportunities and the guarantee of civil rights for African Americans, as well as the uplifting of small businesses. Second, if accepted as a vendor, the cost to participate would entitle SKCreations, LLC to corporate small business membership in the GWUL. Nice bonus! Last but not least, the large number of attendees could open up a whole new market for my products. Haven't I been working towards that after all? So, after several deep breaths, the choice was clear.

A couple of weeks after submitting my application I received a call from GWUL to schedule an interview. I was psyched! They asked me to bring along a sampling of my products.

The interview was conducted by three very pleasant, very professional women, each one equipped with a clipboard. I presented my items and answered questions while they made notes. Their reaction was positive. At the end I was told that a decision would be made by the end of the week. By the way, this happened on a Monday...would I get any sleep that week? While I left their office feeling pretty good about the way things had gone, I was not going to count my chickens before they hatched. These people obviously meant business, and nothing was guaranteed.

Well, three days after my interview I was notified, to my delight, that I'm in! I don't know when I've been so excited about an upcoming event. I feel honored to have been given this opportunity, but I'm also a bit nervous. Now comes the real test...how many products can I make between now and the conference? If only I could stop hyper-ventilating. I will be ready! Stay tuned!

The market takes place at the future site of the museum at 4511 Rhode Island Avenue, North Brentwood, MD 20722. The day will begin with a Site Dedication Ceremony from 11:30AM to 12:30PM, after which the Artist Market will be open until 5:00PM.

The Prince George's African American Museum is currently located at Gallery 110 @ The Gateway Arts Center, 3901 Rhode Island Avenue, Brentwood, MD 20722. The new museum will be constructed on a 2.5-acre site in North Brentwood, MD, the first municipality in Prince George's County incorporated by African American citizens.

Okay, I know I said that I would not complain about the heat after all the snow we got this past Winter, but Oh My God, could it have been any HOTTER this weekend? And the humidity!!! According to The Washington Post, yesterday was D.C.'s hottest day since August 2009, and it's not even officially Summer yet. It was 94 degrees at 2:20p.m. If this keeps up, I'm afraid that by the time August 2010 gets here I won't be able to leave the house! Okay, now that I've gotten that off my chest...

I happily participated in the 1st Annual Annapolis Art & Crafts Festival this weekend. Artists were there from all across the U.S., even Canada. Many brave art patrons came out to visit and shop in spite of the heat, and overall it was a pretty good show. In addition to the artists there was music, food and wine tastings. We had a great weekend at the Old Town Arts & Crafts Festival. It was our first time vending at this event, but hopefully it won't be our last! The art and crafts were amazing, and we made some new friends and had lots of happy customers. :-D I'm glad our booth was next to the fountain because it was HOT and HUMID! I didn't complain though. At least it didn't rain.

The breeze off the fountain kept us from totally overheating. Whew!

There were LOTS of people out. I wish I'd gotten photos of all the dogs! I think I saw every breed there is!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of serving as a volunteer for the 2010 DC Science and Engineering Fair. It was held at McKinley Technology High School in Washington, DC. The science fair has been a tradition for more than six decades and offers students in the nation's capital an opportunity to showcase their scientific knowledge while inspiring them to broaden their understanding of science and its impact on their everyday lives and their future. Having attended DC Public Schools myself, it warmed my heart to see such bright talent amongst this young generation within our city. The science projects covered a broad range of categories, including Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Mathematics, Engineering and Plant Sciences, to name a few. While not every student received an award, it was a very proud day for all. What a wonderful display of the work of creative minds.

I was honored to participate as a panelist yesterday at the 2nd Annual Small Business Forum: The ABCs of Starting a Business, held by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chi Beta Omega Chapter. The sorority recognizes that entrepreneurship is the key to economic survival and that women are facing challenges of managing and expanding new ventures. The panel consisted of six women business owners who brought their expertise, first-hand knowledge and insight into the world of entrepreneurship, and provided some of the resources and tools necessary to start a business. It was a pleasure to interact with the other business owners and such an engaging audience. I thank the chapter for inviting me to participate.

Gateway Arts Center Dedication and Grand Opening

The dedication and grand opening of the Gateway Arts Center at Brentwood took place on Friday, March 19, 2010, and I was proud to be among the many in attendance. Located at 3901 Rhode Island Avenue in Brentwood, Maryland, the Gateway Arts Center is dedicated to presenting and promoting the visual arts with an arts classroom, a gallery of changing exhibitions by regional artists, a contemporary fine crafts store, and artists' studios.

Maryland Lieutenant Governor, Anthony Brown, performed the ribbon cutting to much excitement by the attendees.

The Gateway Arts Center is a partnership between the Gateway Community Development Corporation and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The center is also home to the Prince George's African American Museum & Cultural Center, which is featuring beautiful works by the Uhuru Quilters Guild from March 19, 2010 through May 15, 2010.

Several elected and community officials made remarks, and representatives from Northwestern High School ROTC performed the Call to Order.

I am honored to have my products from SKCreations, LLC collections featured in the fine crafts store.

Creative Every Day Challenge

It's been a while since I updated my status on the Creative Every Day Challenge. Over the last few weeks I've done a couple of shows and worked on some projects in between. I now have several items completed in my my new line...leather bracelets. I created each one out of leather that I re-purposed, and that pleases me very much. The bracelets are embellished with decorative stitching and beads, and fasten with a loop and metallic button. There's a lot of hand sewing going on here, so each one takes a bit of time to complete. I'll only be selling them at shows for now, but I plan to eventually make them available in my Etsy shop. It all boils down to how soon I can create more, hence the challenge...there just aren't enough hours in a day. :-o I hope you like.

Lost in the City by Edward P. Jones

I recently finished reading the book, Lost in the City, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Edward P. Jones. This book won the PEN/Hemingway Award and was nominated for the National Book Award. It is a collection of fourteen short stories filled with characters whose lives will move you to the core. The author is an unassuming literary genius, from whom these tales seem to flow as freely as breathing. Jones is a native of Washington, DC, and one can clearly see that his years of growing up in the city laid the foundation for the man he is today. I found this book to be an insightful and powerful piece of African-American literature, and I highly recommend including it on your must-read list.

The event will be held Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 12:00pm to 7:00pm. The first 50 women will receive a goody bag from the event planners, with hot sample items and gift certificates, and will automatically be entered to win a free vacation! Admission is free.
